San Bernardino County faces many of the same digital access barriers seen across California, which disproportionately impact immigrant and low-income communities. In 2021, 46% of Latino immigrant, 29% Black U.S.-born, and 23% of mixed/other immigrant youth in grades K-12 experienced a digital divide in the state. With more than half of the county identifying as Latino and sizable immigrant communities, these disparities are especially pronounced. Limited access to technology makes it harder for Black and Brown communities to connect with essential resources, including legal services.
To address these barriers, the Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino sought funding from the California Access to Justice Commission to implement five (5) Legal Kiosks, automate family law forms, and establish an integration between LegalServer and Gavel to easily generate family law forms for pre-existing clients.
With this support, the Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino upgraded their clinic space to include five (5) Legal Kiosks. These kiosks provide a safe, accessible environment where clients can attend virtual court hearings, access legal resources, and generate family law forms with assistance from staff.
