A2J Tech Store is a Denver-based social enterprise that builds technology to improve access to justice. We're part digital agency, part cause-based organization. Our clients are non-profit law firms, for-profit law firms, bar associations, law schools, and partner organizations working to improve access to justice.
Location: Denver, Colorado
A2J Tech Store seeks a full-time, 10-week fellow to be part of the team responsible for the creation of automated documents for the most commonly used family law court forms in the state of Colorado. Colorado is significantly lacking in any kind of document automation tools for most of the family law self-help court forms. An individual filing for eviction or divorce would need to know which forms they are required to bring as well as the official title of each document.
This project would have four major phases: Research, Creation, User Testing and finally Outreach. Research will be conducted in the community to find which forms could most benefit from automation. After the research stage, scripts would be developed and reviewed by subject matter experts. Once the automated forms are built, extensive user testing within the community would be conducted. This testing would include potential users as well as lawyers, advocates, subject matter experts, and other A2J Tech Store team members. Finally, the project will engage with the community of county clerks, Legal Aid Organizations and nonprofits in the state to promote the new tool and improve access to justice for those using fillable self-help forms.
During the course of the document automation project, the Fellow will have primary oversight of the project and would be responsible for the research, building, testing and outreach phases of the project. The fellow will conduct the research necessary to decide which court forms would be the most useful in pro se cases. Calling Legal Aid Organizations, county clerks and state courts to gather information will be their main source of data.
During the creation stage, the Fellow will begin translating the court documents into user-friendly scripts. These will be proofread by others and then revised by the Fellow. Once finalized, the scripts will be built as an online fillable form by the Fellow. During user testing, the Fellow will connect with local subject matter experts, lawyers, advocates and most importantly, potential users to test the whole system. After testing and making any necessary changes, the Fellow will be responsible for planning the launch of their new product. Launching will involve partnering with nonprofits and Legal Aid Organizations to offer free clinics demonstrating the new tool and helping users work through the fillable forms.
